John and Pam's China Notebook

sharing our research results in Xiakou, summer 2002

Our China notebook consists of various papers, and other documents we have written about our experience in Sichuan province in China. Between 1991 and 1993 we carried out our primary Ph.D. fieldwork and have several writings that are exclusively about that experience. These include John Flower's Ph.D. thesis, Portraits of Belief: Constructions of Chinese Cultural Identity in the Two Worlds of City and Countryside in Modern Sichuan Province (University of Virginia, Department of History, May 1997) and Pam Leonard's thesis The Political Landscape of a Sichuan Village (University of Cambridge, Department of Anthropology, submitted October 1994). Since 1993, John made a return trip in the summer of 97 and we both returned in the summer of 1998 and again in the winter of 1998-9 on a musical tour of China  with members of Furnace Mountain (or in Chinese Houshan/Firemountain). We again travelled to China the summer of 2002. In 2004 we spent most of the year at the key high school in Ya'an, Yazhong. As part of John's sabbatical year, he undertook a project of his own design to work with local chinese high school students in researching Ya'an's cultural history. To see something of what these students have produced, click here.

For a more holistic listing of written works covering this entire period, see our list of papers and other materials which also includes a list of some papers written for the use of the livestock development group Heifer Project International, who acted as our primary host in China. For more detail on our initial fieldwork experience. You can read an excerpt from Pam's thesis introduction, by clicking here.

Recently we have begun construction of our digital monograph, Landscape and Power in a Sichuan Mountain Village: a digital ethnography of landscape. An preliminary version of this site can be seen at: http://xiakou.uncc.edu

Comments or suggestions are welcome.

This site is still very rouph with some empty links, unformatted footnotes, and non-existent illustrations. We appreciate your patience while we continue to work on these details.
