Master of Arts Degree in History
Old Degree Requirements
Students who registered before Fall 2007 must complete,
with a GPA of 3.0 or better, of one of the following
options:
M.A. in History (thesis option): 30 credit hours
- Required core coursework: 3 hours
- HIST-6693: Historiography and Methodology
- Elective coursework: 21 hours
- At least 15 hours must be at the 6000-level.
- No more than 6 hours in independent study (HIST-
6894)
- No more than 6 hours outside the Department of History.
- At least 6 hours History in fields other than United
States history
- Thesis: 6 hours
M.A. in History (examination option): 30 credit
hours
- Required core coursework: 3 hours
- HIST-6693: Historiography and Methodology
- Elective coursework: 21 hours
- At least 15 hours must be at the 6000-level.
- No more than 6 hours in independent study (HIST-6894)
- No more than 6 hours outside the Department of History.

- Examination (preparation and completion): 3 hours
M.A. in History, Public History Concentration: 36
credit hours
- Required core coursework: 12 hours
- HIST-6693: Historiography and Methodology
- Introduction to Public History
- Introduction to Historic Preservation
- Introduction to Museum Studies
- Elective course work: 18 hours
- At least 3 hours must be a Public History elective.
- At least 6 hours must be in traditional History
seminars.
- No more than 6 hours in independent study (HIST
6894)
- No more than 9 hours outside the Department of History.
- Internship: 3 hours
- Thesis: 3 hours
