Scholarships and Honors

The History Department offers support and recognition to outstanding history undergraduates and graduate students through the Davenport Scholarship, the K. David Patterson prize, Phi Alpha Theta, and the History Honors program.

Davenport Scholarship

The Davenport Scholarship is open to students at all levels who are majoring in history. Depending on resources, the scholarship provides a cash award of up to $1000 for outstanding students on a competitive basis.

Students already enrolled at UNC Charlotte must:

1. Have a 3.0 overall average at the time of consideration.

2. Have at least a 3.2 average in history.

3. Submit the application to the history department by the application deadline (usually mid-March).

4. Submit three letters of recommendation, two of which should be from professors in the history department.

Students awarded the Davenport Scholarship must:

1. Maintain an overall average of 3.0

2. Maintain a history average of 3.25

3. Remain a history major

4. Enroll in one history course during each semester, and at least three history courses each year except during the freshman year. A freshman must enroll in at least one history course each semester.

5. Enroll in HIST 3795

K. David Patterson Memorial Prize

Named in honor of the department’s late colleague, the department awards a $100 prize annually for one undergraduate and one graduate research paper written during the academic year.

Phi Alpha Theta

UNC Charlotte maintains a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. To apply, students need not be history majors, but they must have completed 12 hours of history with a GPA of 3.1 or better. In addition, they must have a 3.0 in two thirds of the remaining courses. There is a one time $50.00 membership fee for all qualified students.

The History Department provides Phi Alpha Theta students with a variety of activities, such as speakers, trips, and luncheons. In addition, a number of national prizes and awards are available to student members. For more information, see the department's Phi Alpha Theta advisor, Dr. Jane Laurent.

History Honors

The Department of History offers an Honors program as well as individual Honors courses. Both History majors and non-majors are welcome to participate. Entry into all honors courses is by permission of the department only.

The Program. The History Honors Program consists of three courses: HIST 3795, Davenport Honors Seminar; HIST 3797,Honors Methods and Practice; and HIST 3799, Honors Thesis. HIST 3795 and 3797 should be taken in sequence, ideally in the Fall and Spring of the junior year, but other options are possible. The thesis hours, HIST 3799, are normally taken in the senior years, usually in the semester before graduation, but research will have begun after completion of HIST 3797. Students considering Honors in History should note that two of the courses in the Honors sequence fulfill requirements for the major. Specifically, HIST 3795 will fulfill the requirement for HIST 2100 and completion of an honors thesis earning a grade of ‘C’ or better will fulfill the requirement for the 4000-level senior seminar.

Admission. Because HIST 3795 and 3797 are taught in sequence, students must complete their application to the History Honors Program well before their expected graduation. For this reason, qualified students are urged to discuss the History Honors Program with their adviser or a member of the Honors Committee early in their career. In addition to the application form, admission to the program requires recommendations from two members of the History faculty and a GPA consistent with the standards for successful completion of the program. Students must also formally apply and be approved for Honors Candidacy by the University Honors Council, a process which will be initiated as part of the HIST 3795 course.

Certification Requirements. To complete the History Honors Program a student must complete HIST 3795, HIST 3797, HIST 3799 and write an Honors thesis of A quality as judged by a committee of readers; they must also have a GPA of at least 3.2 in the Honors courses. Students must also complete the History major with a GPA of at least 3.25 in all history courses and an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
